Buying an Engagement Ring
INSURE YOUR NEW RING AND DIAMOND

After you make the final purchase, ask your Jeweler for an appraisal so you can insure the Engagement Ring. You should also make sure that any lab report information should be on your appraisal, such as a GIA Report. You should insure your ring and diamond for "all Perils"such as loss, damage or mysterious disappearance.

You can add the ring to your homeowners policy, or renters insurance. You can also look into specialized Jewelry Policies such as the one provided by Jewelers Mutual.

You may want to scan or take pictures of all the receipts, lab reports, and appraisals for future reference.
MAKING THE FINAL DECISION:

You left the last stage with options that should meet your expectations and meet any time constraints you may have.

But as you go through the final decision making process, bear in mind that there may not be a "Perfect" option. You may have to weigh some of your criteria to come up with the best option.

This is where the decision of who to buy can come into play, the place you buy can help you weigh the criteria if you are dealing with a knowledgeable and experienced person, and the store may also have policies in place to assist if you find out that your decision does not meet her expectations.
MAKING THE PURCHASE:
Make sure that you understand every aspect of the ring and diamond you choose. The material the ring is made in, the quality of the diamonds in the mounting as well as the quality of the center diamond. The major information should appear on the receipt: Center Diamond weight and quality (any lab report number); the material and gem weight for the mounting. Also make sure you understand any warranties, and any lab reports that may accompany the ring and diamond.

When you make the final decision, make sure you get all the receipts and lab reports that go with the Ring and Diamond. You should keep this in a safe place, or scan them and save them digitally.

If you finance the purchase, make sure you clearly understand any special terms (such as "Same as Cash" type options)
